Can you believe it's already October???  Time sure flies when you are working with the most amazing students!  I apologize for my late post.  Time has seemed to slip away from me since conferences and I haven't been able to get it back.  We started the second half of Module 1 by comparing and contrasting ratios, rates, and unit rates.  We discussed that rates use the words "______ per _______" and we discussed where in the world we might find rates.  The students have also been working with real life problems in order to calculate the unit rate and then using the unit rate to calculate other parts of the problem.  A few reminders: Mid Module 1 Test Retakes are on Monday (10/15/18) during lunch.  Please note that I will not grade a retake if the test corrections are not stapled to it.  There will also be a quiz this Friday.  The quiz will be on calculating unit rates and being able to use a unit rate in order to calculate other parts of a real world problem.  As always, the study guide for the quiz will be due on Thursday/Friday (Day 4) of the week.  Looking forward to another great couple of weeks!

The last couple of weeks were filled with a lot of frustration, but a lot more success.  We dove deeper into finding equivalent ratios by using ratio tables and ended the two weeks with finding equations that describe the relationship between columns in a ratio table.  I am still so impressed with how well the students are adjusting to middle school life and to the pacing of this rigorous curriculum . We also had a lot of practice with simplifying fractions and finding the Greatest Common Factor.  Many students needed to refresh their memory from elementary school so we spent a lot of time on this essential skill.  This upcoming week, we will finally be using the chromebooks in the classroom!  I am so excited to use technology as a valuable resource in the classroom and I believe that our learning will grow exponentially.  As a reminder, if your student would like to improve their quiz score, they must do test corrections on a separate piece of paper.  Test corrections are due Tuesday, September 25th . During lunch, those that scored below a 70% on the quiz will turn in their test corrections and I will give them a retake of the quiz.  For those that scored above a 70% but would like to improve their grade, they must only do test corrections and it will raise their grade by up to 10% (one letter grade).  Looking forward to another exciting week!

Welcome back to school!

What an exciting first three weeks of school we had!  I enjoyed meeting everyone at Back to School Night and I am hopeful for the year to come.  On Monday, August 27th, we officially started the Eureka Math curriculum.  The students enjoyed discussing different ratios that occur in our lives and the different ways that we write a ratio.  We then spent the next two weeks solving real world word problems using tape diagrams.  Tape diagrams help the students to visualize the concept of a ratio.  The students enjoy highlighting key information in the word problems and color coding the tape diagrams to match!  Needless to say, I have some very colorful papers to grade!  We ended the weeks with a quiz on the first 5 lessons of the curriculum.  I hope to update this website every couple of weeks.  In the meantime, I regularly update the Math 6.1 calendar with the objectives and the agenda (along with any notes that we took in class) for each day.  As always, please don't hesitate to reach out if you have any questions or concerns for me.
